National Security or too much big brother?

There are lawsuits abound regarding cellular telephone companies sharing "our" private information with the federal government under the guise of national security. The U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights provides American citizens with certain protections, but when does government cross the line? We have felt the long term effects of terrorism and have witnessed what inaction can do to our society. Should we give up certain rights to be protected? Can we trust that our government will always do the right thing?

I think that when cell companies give out the information is because of important reasons for the safety of the people. The federal government doesnt want to know info for no reason and plus if i was working for the government and just wanted to check information on a person for security reasons, i wouldnt be looking at how many minutes they use or report to their wives and say hey your significant other is cheating, no i woyuld be looking for calls to terrorist countries and things of that sort. All im saying is that if you arent doing anything illigal then what do you have to worry about. I know that anything can happen and that we have to be prepared to act and to stop these things from happening.(4418)

I wouldn't always trust everything that the government does and says, but for the most part i do trust that they ensure my safety. i wouldnt mind giving up certain rights, depending on what they were. Just my opinion. 3782

For years Lending copmanies have retained our personal information for their benefits without our consents. I think it's a small price to pay to surrended personal information to the government to help protect our country from people who are in the country and looking to disrupt our way of life.2039

Unfortunately we as citizens have to give up some of our rights in order to better the governments changes in protecting us. I don't really like the idea but they are the ones in the position to protect us.

The Patriot Act has its pro and cons...as does many bills in our government but i do beleive that it crosses the line at times then runs back to use 911 as an excuse. So i think that National Security is sometimes a cover up so that big brother can keep a very very close watch and at times invade privacies without merit. (7885)

I've always been told not to trust anything but the dollar in your pocket... and I still don't know what that means. The gov. is going to do what they want regardless of what you say. Is it right? No, but who's to stop them. They will argue the matter by saying that it's a way to catch criminals, but we would argue back by saying it's invasion of privacy. It would be a cont. battle just like abortion... As you can see abortion is still in effect, so will phone tapping. 6809

I believe wheather we like it or not the governement will do things that we have no control over. We must trust them to be at our best interest and abide by them the best we can. I just don't understand how all our calls can be montored and lanuages translated to know who is a threat and who is not. 9146

HELL NO, the government is always crossing the line that will kept pushing the rights and freedoms that we do have in this country until it has turn itself back into what it started out not to be. Its like they make the laws like they make commericals. They advertise the best offers and hot new deals but at the end it always someone talking fast about the hidden fees and or the side effects to the new found cure. What is the point of having privacy because when I am on the phone with my boyfriend and I want him to come over I want to talk inapropriate(dirty) I got BOB listening in on my phone conversation BOB is gathering what type of information about me not a terriost attack on the pentagon but that I am a freak and I got a man coming over in a couple of minutes and they hear the perlude of what was going to take place. The government is always going to cross the lines because of AUTHORITY NO MATTER WHAT. If they want to figure who the hell I am they can locate my email and use my last dight of my social to narrow it down to find out more about who I am. As much as my ancestor and those of my descent have fought for civil rights and much more it is no way in hell I am going to give up the little
I got. So I have to start all over again because I let them take the very thing I hold as a prize posession. I already have many strikes against me because of my color, my sex, and most importantly my orgin, where I was born and raise and the more wrong I do is only going to make what rights I have earn harder to keep. I can not trust my own DAMN President so what makes you think I can trust my government. The President is only one person NOW imagine fifty more people like him I will not have Social Secruity from the looks of it I will work all my life thanks to my CG (corrupted governement) who says one thing and does another. 1587

If it is a true matter of National Security, I might consider. Personally, I have problem with my cellphone company, I contracted for services, to invade my privacy because the goverment says it needs to know. Unfortunately, the reality is that no matter what I think, the goverment is gonna take whatever initiative it wants and justification won't be necessary because it is the government. *2232

there are times whe the government will use thier power to take advantage of situations which isn't right. We should not give up our right's just to be protected if there is another way to get around it which im sure there is (6018)

You really are damned if you do and damned if you dont. If extra precautions are taken then no one feels safe. If too many are taken then no one's privacy is being respected! (SPC7202)

I thought we had a right to privacy and a right to free speech. So what is next all homes to be bugged? spc5294

The government must respect the people's right to privacy. However, if there is a threat of national security then the people must lose some of their rights temporarily to ensure their safety and protection. SPC 5936

I feel that if there is a threat then the government should do what they need to protect us. If that means giving up certain rights, then so be it. spc5965

I understand the seriousness of protecting us. However, the government has been listening to our conversations for years. We just out smarted them when it came to the cell phone now they want it to seem as though it's an safety precaution. Yea Right! Just watch what you say on the phone today because, it might come and bite you in the butt tomorrow.spc0460

Hell no dont trust in the government. They are corrupt. Yes them taping into our phone conversations may can prevent some terrorism. But I believe myself that our phones probably were taped before 9/11. So if they couldnt prevent that they cant prevent other acts.

As American citizens we are protected by certain laws concerning our privacy and if we the people have to abide by these laws as well.

I fyou beliebe in your self then that means whatever you choose to do like for example let the goverment take right that protects us we should be sastify because we knew what was goin on and we were agree. 5794

I think that we should definitely have a right to privacy. But I don't to be so naive as to think that we are not already well past the point of owning any real type of privacy.(9510)

you cant trust anybody.and i dont feel like we should give upour rights or our freedom for anything or anybody. we arent safe because no one istheir brothers keeper anymore, everyone is out for self now. he cant even trust the police how we going to trust the governement? this whole american dream and this whole freedom in america thing is a joke. you cant have a intimate coversation with someone over the phone and what makes it worse is you paying paying the bill and you cant have privacy? its really crazy the way things are going now a days.CA7739

No we cannot trust our government to do the right thing. While I am all for national security, we need to tread very carefully when giving up certain rights because before you know it we could loss all of them. SPC 3027

Our way of life has changed forever. We now live in dangerous and uncertain times. If you pose a threat to our society, then yes you must be tapped. But in the long run can you really trust the Government to pick out the real threats. I would not bet on it.spc8725

I think we have seen enough about the government and what they do. Inaction is not the fault of security but the people who did not act on the information that they did have. I think this is going too far and soon the government will want to control every part of your life just by saying that it's for your security. Not buying it.

Darnell I do not under no circumstances want to give up my personal privacy to be safe. I don't trust for our government to do the right thing. Because our personal phone conversations can be recorded for one's own entainment. Not to mention if i'm engaged in a intense conversation with my lady friend, I don't want any government officials listening in on what I am talking about. Especially when it is not terrorism related.

WHY DO PEOPLE COMPLAIN TO MUCH.."OMG THERE IS TOO MUCH CRIME OUR TAX MONEY IS BEING WASTED" THEN WHEN THE GOVT TRY TO DO SMTH ABOUT IT "OMG YOUR INVADING MY PRIVACY I HAVE RIGHTS" IF YOUR NOT A CRIMINAL & YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO HIDE WHY DO YOU CARE IF THE GOVERNMENT TAPES UR PHONE CALLS? YOU DONT TRUST THE GOVT?WITH WAT?WIT KEEPING CALLS TO YOUR BOYFRIEND PRIVATE WAT WILL THEY DO WITH THAT?Y WOULD THE GOVT INVADE A HOME OR PERSON THEY KNOW IS CRIME-FREE/INNOCENT? IF UR NOT A CRIMINAL YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY THE GOVT ARE DOING MORE TO KEEP U SAFE BUT IF UR A CRIMINAL OR PLANNING TO BE COMMIT CRIMES THEN YES YOU SHOULD BE VERY SCARED COS SOON THEY WILL VIDEOTAPE UR HOUSE&CALLS WILL FIND YOU.
