The 1967 Newark Riots or Newark Rebellion?

The Newark Riots were devastating for all that were there and for those who had to observe it on the news. The intentions of the police and military must be questioned. The riots, or as they were referred to, were more about the struggle of a group of people rather than the exploitation of an opportune moment. Should the riots be referred to as a "rebellion"? Never in this time frame or any other for that matter will the powers that be understand what struggle and oppression will do to a person's psyche. Do more rebellions have to take place before it is realized? Criminal behavior should be addressed swiftly and harshly, but which participants are we going to label as criminal? You do the research and make your own well informed decision.

WELL HAVING FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE WITHIN MY FAMILY, MY GRANDFATHER WAS PART OF THAT RIOT. HE HAS PASSED WITH BULLETS FROM THAT RIOT IN SIDE OF HIM. WAS IT AN ACT OF REBELLION? YES IT WAS OCCURING TO THE HIPPIES THAT WERE WITH HIM,IT WAS AN ACT OF SHAMING THE POLICE OFFICERS FOR MISTREATING THE CIVILIANS. IM NOT STATING THAT WE SHOULD COMMIT A CRIME TO GET THE SOLUTION TO ANY PROBLEM BUT OUR VOICES NEED TO BE HEARD AND CONSIDERED.

i beleive that it was an act of rebellion...and theirs no problem with calling it that...sometimes we as a society need to to rebell against our government... we must stand up for want we believe in and if the government is not trying to hear what we have to say than i believe in the good of fashion words of Malcolm X, " By Any Means Necessary"... When our people in urban communites are pushed against the wall and pushed they will push back. The riots or rebellion showed that these people felt as if there was a war against them socially so they had to push back with violence, when they were promised so much and recieved very little. Actions speak louder than words and these people had enough. (9146)

Well...i dont know much about the riots to comment on it. But i will say that i think i riot only takes place if the community where the vast majority of the people feel that that it only way they can express there anger with their community/society/government. (7885)

The riots should be referred as a rebllion. It just when you put a pot of water on the stove after awhile the pot heat up and makes a whistling sound it is not going to stop until you remove the presure. So, if the pressure or problem was remove from the City of Newark then it would have not erupted into a fight against the struggle of oppression. 1587

A riot is rebellion. It usually stems from the need to heard "By any means necessary-" Malcolm X. Sometimes, it is intended to act out in a peaceful manner but anger and fustration can quickly overshadow any peaceful intent when their shouts are not heard or worse, just plain ignored. *2232

The point will never be made. I was nowhere in thoughts or mind when this riot occured and do not know anyone who experienced it. But i am pretty sure that these individuals started this riot and the fact that they firmly believed in what they stood for...spc5294

SPC 5936 It is difficult to address who are the criminals in this situation. The police were doing their jobs at the time. Blacks rioted because they opposed the laws at the time. By rioting I believe they were standing up for their beliefs and protesting at the same time. Many did partake in criminal activity. However, it was needed to bring about change in America

The riots that occurred can be labeled as a rebellion to some; I think to those who had a distant relation to what occured. I think that if you personally affected then it was more of a riot to stand up to what you believed in. spc5965

The powers that be will never understand that struggle because they didnt live it. But the police in this instance I believe were abusing their power. And yes there will take a couple more rebellions for the powers that be to understand what I struggle can do to a persons mental.

It depends some cops are corrupt we can punish those becasue they are consider criminals. And other citizens that they commiting crimes we can punish those too. It all depends it doesnt matter if they cops or lawyers or doctors they all must receive the same level of punishments. 5794

It was a form of rebellion and can be referred to as that. They were angry and frustrated and struck back the only way they could.

Prof. I believe that when our people in urban communites are pushed against the wall time and time again they will push back. The riots or rebellion showed that these people felt as if there was a war against them socially so they had no choice but to push back with violence, when they were promised so much and recieved very little. I personally have no problem with calling it a rebellion. The fact that there have been so many similar riots across the country show that it was a nation wide issue and not just something which only happened in Newark. The British probably thought of the American revolution as nothing more than a few riots when it first started. SPC 3027

Darnell My grandfather had spoken with me about the Newark Riots, and I don't think people just riot for nothing. What events led up for the city residents to resort to such violent behaviors. I would label the corrupt politicians and police officers as the criminals in this matter. Because the riot was direct reaction to the officers actions.
